Goodbye Social Media
When blogging was a big deal, I broadcasted everything in our lives on our family blog. I also started a professional blog that became popular and turned into a little business for myself. I showcased crafts, thrift outfits, and beauty tips. Blogging quickly became exhausting. Especially emotionally exhausting to try and keep up with the appearance of perfectionism. But with my blog, came the haters and trolls that wanted to give their opinions. After awhile, it wasn't fun anymore.
Facebook and Instagram became not fun for me as well. It's another form of posting things to entertain your audience with the best side of yourself. I also became too codependent on relying on social media to give me joy in my day. I would open the app and expect to be entertained by others and especially scrolling on reels. For years I wanted to delete social media but my jobs always relied on me having it so it wasn't an option. I also used the excuse that all these platforms were now where I kept all my memories, or kept up on the recent news - so of course I couldn't get rid of the app.
Saying Goodbye to Social Media and Hello to Your Life
I’ve seen social media go from that cool new service we check in with from time to time to an all-consuming entity that we just can’t seem to get away from.
2023 became my "take a leap and say goodbye to social media year!" I have posted a couple things on Facebook because others asked me to share something so they could view it. But removing social media 99% from my life has been the best decision. I didn't cancel my accounts, they are still active, mostly because I may need them for a rare occasion or two, but I'm free and I feel it. Although I should mention, I do still use SOME social medias. For example:
Be Real
I should mention that I do have the BeReal app and love it. (For now). I love that for the most part I get to see where my friends are 'IN THE MOMENT' and not their perfect highlights. It's so fun to see real life for once. I love doing this app with my kids, and with my in-laws who are serving a mission in England currently. Needless to say, it's the only somewhat healthy social media I approve of. It's fun for the moment and doesn't take my time away from me. But it does let me love myself by posting makeup free moments, nap times, or true chaos and fun. :)
Messenger
I have always silenced notifications on all my social medias. But because I've said goodbye to Facebook and Instagram, I turned on my notifications for Messenger because both sides of our families use this platform to communicate recent updates in a group chat. I still rarely use messenger for myself, (I usually post directly to the person I want to communicate with rather than in the messenger group). But this has kept me in the loop with both families for the most part.
Blog
This blog has become an outlet and a memory storage for me and my loved ones.
I gathered ALLLLL my images from Facebook, Instagram, my previous blogs, and my phone. (You can imagine the amount of time this took me but I was determined to finally let go of social media). I compiled all the images here categorized by the year. (Note: I pay $5 a month for photo storage on this blog). I also like to randomly post my thoughts. Just for myself and my posterity. It's exactly what I need. If my life and thoughts are going to be online, it's going to be here on this blog. So if you made it this far, welcome.
